Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Office
New Jersey Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, P.C. (formerly, Barbieri, Colameo, Berardo & Wuebbels, Associates in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, P.C.)
New Jersey Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, P.C. (formally, Barbieri, Colameo, Berardo & Wuebbels, Associates in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, P.C.) is a specialty group practice limited to the recognized dental specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. We are four Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and our three offices are conveniently located throughout Bergen and Hudson Counties. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Drs. Barbieri, Colameo, Berardo & Wuebbels manage a wide variety of problems relating to the teeth, mouth and facial regions. Our practice encompasses the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with expertise ranging from reconstructive facial surgery, corrective jaw surgery to wisdom tooth removal. We also diagnose and treat facial pain disorders, facial injuries, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ) and perform a full range of dental implant procedures.
The specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery requires up to 6 additional years of hospital based surgical and anesthesia training. These additional years of training take place after graduation from an accredited dental school and distinguish Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as the most extensively trained specialists in the dental profession. Upon the completion of four years of dental school, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons enter into a rigorous postgraduate hospital based residency program. Our residency programs specifically address and concentrate on many areas of oral facial care, which include Temporomandibular Joint Therapy (both conservative and invasive), Oral facial reconstructive surgery (which includes the use and placement of osseointegrated dental implants) and anesthesiology. Oral and Maxillofacial surgical residency training programs are by far the most rigorous, demanding and comprehensive of any dental specialty training. Throughout our training we have the opportunity to engage directly with all surgical specialties in the medical and dental community. The expertise acquired during this tenure enables oral surgeons to diagnosis and treat the most complex problems that arise in the oral facial region. In addition our unique training gives us the ability to assess the maxillofacial anatomy in respect to oral rehabilitation. It is a fact that whenever there is a difficult problem or an unexpected occurrence in the oral and maxillofacial region the patient is most often referred to an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon.
Have you ever had the unfortunate experience of running into an unforeseen or unexplained difficulty in your dentist’s office, or a problem in another dental specialist’s office? Were you aware that the greater the Oral-Facial problem, the more likely it is that you will be referred to an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons office.
There is much to be said about how one decides on which dental professional is most trained and best able to perform oral surgery. It should first be noted that all licensed, dental school graduates are legally able to perform all phases of oral surgery. In the dental profession there is no limit as to what a licensed dentist can perform in his or her own private office. There is however a legal and professional “standard of care” limit as to what dentists can perform. This “standard of care” is not so much a dentist’s ability to begin or initiate treatment, rather it is the experience and ability of the dentist to quickly recognize and treat all of the various potential complications that make them uniquely qualified to treat you. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery specialty practices are limited to the realm of a very specific dental specialty code. Currently their are only 8 recognized dental specialties. These specialties, listed in alphabetical order are as follows:
- Dental Radiology
- Endodontics
- Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
- Oral Pathology
- Orthodontic
- Periodontics
- Prosthodontics
- Pedodontics
If one reviews this list carefully, noticeably missing are the areas of Temporomandibular Joint therapy, Dental anesthesiology and Dental Impantology. These are 3 subject areas that are only briefly addressed in dental undergraduate education and currently there is no formally licensed, advanced training recognized in these areas within the dental community. There is no formal dental specialty recognized by the American Dental Association or the American Medical Association that would declare a practitioner a specialist in these areas.
We bring these important distinctions to your attention because there is a very common general misconception amongst the public that all-inclusive surgical approaches to oral rehabilitation problems may best be addressed in one office or under “one roof”. This concept could not be any further from the truth. Surgery is best performed by a surgical specialist in a facility designed specifically for surgery in cooperation with a professional referral from medical/dental colleague. The legal standard of care for performing any type of surgery requires:
- Knowledge of the diagnosis and alternatives to treatment
- Experience and skill in performing the chosen surgery
- And most importantly the knowledge, training and experience in addressing and effectively treating all the potential complications of the surgery performed.
As Oral Surgeons we have a referral base that consists of hundreds of restorative dentists as well as primary care physicians and surgical specialists throughout the medical community. We are affiliated directly with the Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center and are the primary doctors called upon to assess cancer patients that require chemotherapy and radiation treatment. In addition to being a specialty practice that limits itself to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, we bring to you over 100 years of combined surgical and clinical experience spread out over 4 doctors, and we are all Board Certified in Specialty of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
We feel strongly that this information is necessary to enable you to make the appropriate decision as to what professional is best suited to address your oral surgical needs. If you have an oral facial problem or perhaps you are planning to reconstruct and rehabilitate your oral cavity, we pledge to work closely with the restorative dentist or professional of your choice. Your case will be given personalized attention and additional input from a surgical specialist’s viewpoint. Our office will ensure that your doctors are kept informed of your surgical progress and that when the time is correct they will be prepared to complete the restorative and rehabilitation procedure as planned.
